Star PUB - Derelict and now gone ....
Goodbye
to another building !
Council
chiefs agreed in December that the Star Inn, on South Promenade, should be
bulldozed to make way for a new £12m hotel on the site. Blackpool Pleasure
Beach managing director Amanda Thompson revealed ambitious proposals to
redevelop the land by building a 120-bedroom hotel to sit alongside the
existing four-star Big Blue.
A heritage report
accompanying the application to pull down the Star describes the pub’s
design as being “at odds” with the scale of surrounding buildings.
It says the Star has “limited heritage merit” and the loss of the
building will be outweighed by the value of the proposed replacement.
Although the pub is a locally listed building, there was no objection to
the demolition by Blackpool Council’s conservation officer, but a
request has been made for a historical record to be made of the site
prior to any work commencing.

The new hotel, which will be built on the site after demolition work is
completed, is expected to open its doors to the public in 2019 - two other buildings at the south entrance to the Pleasure Beach will be demolished
to make way for the new development.
The
Star Inn of today replaced an earlier Star Inn Public House which was
demolished in the 1920’s to facilitate a widening of the Blackpool
promenade and to enable improved coastal access.
Work to demolish the Star Pub began on the 8th of January 2018 - below artist impression !

A little more history next ...Roman coins (minted in
Alexandria) found in the sand dunes between the Star Inn and Harrowside in
November 1906. Nearby were the remains of an “ancient building” - to this day no one can say what that building was or where !
In 1839 The Star Hotel: A ship called “The
Crusader” was wrecked at South Shore on the 8th of January, opposite the
Coastguard’s house. The few survivors were looked after in the Britannia Inn at
the corner of what is now Shaw Road. A few Marton men were sent to prison, in
the House of Correction on Marsh Lane at Preston, having been caught taking
silk from the wreck. The sandbank that the ship hit is now known as Crusader
Bank.
Below ( from the Nick Moore collection ) circa 1880
In the 1850s, the coastguard
house was transformed into the Seven Stars Inn, later being called the Starr
Inn, the Seven Stars Inn again, and once more, the Star Inn). In the 1890s,
there was another, wooden, building just to the south of it, known as Uncle
Jack’s Cabin.
Below two more from the Nick Moore collection ( and also posted on Blackpool's Past )
In 1931 the Star Hotel and
Public House opened in front of the site of the Star Inn on the 17th of January.
After years of commercial interest, it was finally purchased by the Pleasure
Beach in 1994. The pub was renamed the
Apple and Parrot in July 2014 after re-furbishment.
Above `1907 - Postcard by Pete Dumville
In the 1990's ( showing my age here ) I remember watching the 'UtterGutter Band ' - and also attending Blackpool's first Star Trek club.
Above just before they started to knock down , and mid distruction ! Another building lost to time...
